April 2024

Two especially notable things are happening the first weekend of April.

Friday the 5th is the Wonder Valley Experimental Music Festival Virtual Edition. Several short pieces by Intangible (gamin, Robert Reigle, Tim Feeney, and myself) will be part of the live video stream at 8PM PST. Tune in here.

We’re also releasing that full recording session on Bandcamp, and the 5th is a Bandcamp Friday, which means we get almost everything you pay. Click below for a preview track, but if you wait until the 5th to order then more of your money goes to us.

On the 6th at 3:30PM I’m co-presenting a special Soundwaves show with the Cold Blue Music label and playing in two of the pieces. Because of rain damage to the library auditorium, we’re moving to the Edye, which is a small blackbox theater at the Broad Stage, 1310 11th St. That’s 11th & Santa Monica, just a few blocks from the Main Library. Admission and parking are free.

The program starts with John Luther Adams’ “Darkness and Scattered Light” for five basses. This is the LA premiere and is a tribute to Robert Black, who recorded all five parts on the Cold Blue album. The players are James Bergman, John Graves, Hakeem Holloway, Christopher Roberts, and myself, with Nicholas Deyoe conducting. Christopher, James, and I will stay on stage for the “Flying” movement of Christopher’s “Trios for Deep Voices,” a set of pieces inspired by time he spent living in the jungle of Papua New Guinea. Nicholas Chase’s “Tiny Thunder,” for piano four-hands, concludes the show. This is the world premiere, played by Jennifer Logan and Brian Pezzone.

Also, on the 19th, my jazz band The Soapbox has our regular show on the third Friday of the month at the Industry Cafe & Jazz in Culver City, at 6039 Washington Blvd. 6:30-9PM. No cover, but plan to order dinner. They have delicious and reasonably priced Ethiopian/Eritrean and soul food. We have been digging into the inside/outside material lately; our April sets will feature tunes by Eric Dolphy, Carla Bley, Julius Hemphill, Ornette Coleman, David Murray, etc. The lineup will be Charles Sharp (reeds), Robert Jacobson and Kristian Aspelin (guitars), R. Scott Dibble (keyboard), and Peter Valsamis (drums), plus yours truly on the contrabass.

Hope to see you there!
