And now… the fall season

I have a motlier-than-usual assortment of shows the rest of this year.

The slow re-emergence of the Watts Ensemble continues at the second Sunday early evening series hosted by Tim Friedlander. There are no longer the added attractions of Charles Sharp and Breeze Smith in the band, but the last show did offer the spectacle of me sight-reading in the dark.

On November 5 I will be a ringer in the bass section of USC’s Concert Orchestra. They are doing a first-ever joint venture with their jazz program, playing orchestrations of some Dave Brubeck and Bob Mitzner tunes, plus some pieces by one of their PhD students and Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.” The jazz/classical crossover I’m used to is improvisers playing Stockhausen or Christian Wolff, so this will be a glimpse of another world.

November 16 Next (Charles Sharp, Andrea Centazzo, and I) will play the first show at a new venue the Cultural Alliance of Long Beach is using. It’s upstairs from a pub called Shenaigans. Doors at 3. Several other more-or-less outside jazz acts will also appear. No cover.

I am pretty sure that Dec. 5 I will be in the band for ArcoVert. Green Bow? It’s a film festival with the scores played live. Should be fun.

Then, on the 7th, the mighty Beethoven 9 with the Santa Monica Symphony at SaMo High. 7PM. Free admission. I can’t promise there won’t be any holiday songs; there will be a choir on hand, but just come for the Beethoven, OK?

More good stuff coming in 2015!
